Friends of Oatland Island host Fundraiser

It’s been more than a month since a devastating EF-1 tornado ripped through the islands of leaving the Oatland Island Wildlife Center, damaged and closed for the past 5 weeks closed.

You may remember the awful scene back on July 27th leaving trees uprooted, branches snapped in half, buildings damaged and animals forced out of their homes.

The damage adding up to tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

People came out in droves tonight to the paws and claws fundraiser to support Oatland Island.

Friends of Oatland Island held fundraisers at two different locations, Molly McGuires on Wilmington Island and Tubby's in Thunderbolt.

20 percent of sales went toward rebuilding the wildlife center. Organizers tell News 3, when the tornado hit this past July, they were just getting back to normal after Hurricanes Matthew and Irma.

"Sheer sadness. Because I know oatland island has been working so hard to rebuild after our hurricanes last year...at this point it's just coming together like the community showing their support and we just have to take it in stride a day at a time. every dollar does count to get us back and reopened,” says Board Member, Cyndi Satlow.

We are unsure of an exact number for donations so far but they thank everyone for the generous donations. All fundraisers combined they have raised thousands.
